Miyagi and Aya, two angels rating the Earthians like Chihaya and Kagetsuya, stop by for a visit while they're re-locating to a new area. Chihaya is polite but has been having nightmares about black wings, and can't get it out of his head. So he let's Kagetsuya take the pair out while he stays home alone.
As he's brooding a message comes in on their computer informing them of a new lucifer with black wings. Chihaya prints out the map and goes out to find the lucifer so that he can find out what is wrong with him. He doesn't find Sapphire, the lucifer he's searching for, but Kagetsuya comes to try and talk him into just going home. When Chihaya refuses, Kagetsuya gives him the directions to Sapphire's new place and tells him he's going by Cliff.
When Kagetsuya returns home he covers for Chihaya, especially not letting Aya know anything about it. Chihaya ends up nearly following a girl, who he isn't trying to because he's just following directions. He finally finds the apartment he's looking for and knocks on the door, only to have the same girl open it. She tries to close it but another man knocks Chihaya out of the way and forces the door open.
It's Cliff's drug dealer. He takes the money he's owed and leaves with a taunt. The girl closes the door again before Chihaya even gets to say anything, locking him outside.
Chihaya pounds on the door but she never opens it. When he screams out Sapphire's name, Cliff (who is in the other room) hears him and knows he's an angel. He doesn't tell Blair though, and glances out the window when Chihaya finally leaves the building.
Chihaya doesn't actually leave though. The next day when Blair goes out to do the shopping Cliff goes to see Chihaya in the park and find out what he wants. Chihaya never manages to ask about the black wings though. Even as they're walking back Cliff is interrupted by Highman, a record executive who wants to get a recording of Cliff's music. Cliff refuses but doesn't get very far before he passes out.
He wakes up in his bedroom with Chihaya watching over him. Again Chihaya doesn't have a chance to ask his question as Cliff is too weak. He tells Chihaya to open his drawer, where his drugs are because he needs them. Chihaya finally has a chance to ask about his wings, but Cliff passes out again.
Blair comes home to discover Chihaya taking care of Cliff. She tells Chihaya about the record Cliff gave her. He only made one copy of it, and it was just for her. That's when men break into the apartment and steal the record. Chihaya runs after the men to see that Kagetsuya coming around the corner, and shouts for him to get the record. As their fighting another man pulls out a gun and shoots the record, shattering it to pieces.
Blair is left with only the shattered record to remember Cliff by, and she sits idly trying to place all the pieces back together. Cliff has woken up again, and tells Chihaya and Kagetsuya to come inside his room and close the door.
Chihaya finally gets to ask his question. Unfortunately, Cliff doesn't have black wings for the same reason as Chihaya. He caught the cancer, and dyed his hair white to try and hide it. The cancer was slowly killing him, and he started using drugs to get away from the pain. He then asks his own question. How long he has to live.
Blair listens in as Kagetsuya tells him he only has another month. She's devastated, but doesn't leave him. Kagetsuya finally convinces Chihaya to go home with him.
On the train ride back Chihaya figures out why they shot the record though and jumps out of the moving train, forcing Kagetsuya to follow him. He runs back to the apartment to find that's it's been trashed, and neither Blair nor Cliff are there.
They were kidnapped by Highman, who forces Cliff to sing or else he'll shoot Blair. By the time Chihaya arrives the song is recorded, and he's about to shoot the couple so that'll he'll have the only existing copy of Cliff's song.
Kagetsuya catches up with them again and another fight breaks out. Highman runs off with the record an Cliff chases after him. As he struggles with Highman he gets shot in the chest and Highman runs off again. Kagetsuya catches up with him then, knocking the man out and taking the record back.
Blair and Chihaya are waiting at the reception like Cliff told them to before he left. Cliff arrives, stumbling through the crowd outside and drags himself inside. He gets Chihaya and Blair to drag him to the stage, bleeding. They run next to him and try to help him, but Cliff tries to reach out for his guitar. Chihaya gives it to him, though he can barely hold it, and as he struggles to play his recording starts playing over the speakers. Kagetsuya has gone into the sound booth with it and put it in. Cliff makes sure to let them know that the recording belongs to Blair.
As Chihaya and Kagetsuya leave Cliff dies. Miyagi and Aya leave, and Kagetsuya sees them off since Chihaya is in his room moping about his wings. Kagetsuya comforts Chihaya, to little avail.
