Opinions

Personally I enjoyed the Petshop of Horrors very much, which must be obvious or I wouldn't have made a page about it. So I decided to write up why I liked it.
First off there is the Count. Count D is mysterious, always seeming to know what is going to happen next. He also knows his place. He bows not only to the Kirin but to Nancy in the fourth episode. When he makes contracts he makes it very clear what the terms are, so it really isn't his fault if they can't keep to them. It isn't by any strange twist in the contract that he tricks these people; they ruin themselves.
Of course there is also Leon. He's the other constant in all the episodes. He suspects the petshop because it's the link between all the murders. In a way he is right. I think the main statement though is that Count D isn't the problem, it is the people who are the problem. They can't handle their responsibilities or refuse to handle them. D only provides them with what will make them happy if they follow simple instructions, and they can't.
At least that is the main point in the first episodes. In the second two episodes I believe it gets deeper. It makes a rather sad statement about humans, actually. As I previously wrote the third episode is my personal favorite. It is the one about an actor who had one huge hit and then couldn't get anymore good parts. He takes in Medusa, and cares for her just as the Count tells him to. The problem is he still can't get a good job. It would be good to point out that the reason he didn't get picked in the audition is because he competed against a rising star in the music industry, and that star's agent was the producer's lover. Things like this happen in the real world and it's very sad. Robin never did anything to bring down his own fall; he was a victim of the world. And when he died people decided to finally take notice to him. I think this made a blaring statement about how unfair the world can be.
What I loved even more about that episode was Medusa. She loved him without seeing him. Before I saw the episode I thought she'd be another one of the Count's twisted pets, but she ended up a victim in the end too. With her belief in him she was able to inspire Robin to go out and try again. Sadly he still couldn't.
The fourth episode seems to be the episode most people like. It also had a different twist than the first two. Roger is a Congressman who has always been considered the bad apple and he's trying to change that. Perhaps it would be better to say his assistant was trying to change that. Kelly spent most his time working for Roger's goal, and in the end the Kirin granted Kelly's wish for Roger to become President by making him Roger. He also got his second wish, to make Nancy smile. As in all episodes though, there was still death. To do this the real Roger had to die. But the episode never focused on Roger and leaves the viewers with a sour vision of him.
One of my favorite parts in the entire series is when Count D actually taunts Leon in the third episode. Before and after that D usually remains quite a bit more subtle, and his suggesting Leon to eat the bird because he must be suffering from a lack of calcium put an interesting personality twist on him. Leon was able to reply as he smugly flicked his nose, often a sign of arrogance. The scene was very well done as far as their interaction went and they played off each other well. It also gave the suggestion that D enjoyed teasing Leon, which I think remains mostly subtle throughout the episodes.
Actually, D seems to enjoy teasing many people, it's just displayed more in Despair than any other episode. He also calls Robin "Your Highness" in that episode, even though Robin doesn't seem to care for it much.
D also has a sweet tooth and makes adorable faces when Leon brings him something to eat. Actually, the only time the Count seems to freak out is when Leon puts a snack in front of him. So, despite his ever calm composure, the Count actually has a personality.
The art in the show is very pleasing to the eye. Even when it's only focusing on a cup of tea the steam will still be dancing back and forth. It's a very simple scene, but still very lovely. The Count is, of course, the effeminant Chinese man running the petshop, and his cheongsam always has an elaborate design. This is especially well drawn on the first episode. His odd eyes are beautiful too. Leon isn't quite so beautiful (nor does he have a very good fashion sense), but he fits in well enough with the detective scene.
I would have liked to seen more interaction between the Count and Leon with them playing off of each other. Each episode had it's new plot that they had to unfurl though, and there wasn't much interaction outside of what was there plotwise. Leon always suspected D, and D always got away. But what they have is very good and very enjoyable. I'd recommend for people to go watch it.
